Infrastructure Issues

Highway 109/100 infrastructure, roundabouts, costs

Federal & MODOT funds combined to cover most project costs. We pay the leftover fraction.

  • ROUNDABOUTS are a change that "take some getting used to".
  • Opinions vary, but I've found them to be better looking and more convenient than lights.
  • Well-planned ones are proven to improve safety, traffic flow, and resource efficiency.
  • I’ve noticed a flow problem myself, and there may be others as well but in fairness, the work is not finished yet.

Rural Internet Access Committee (RIAC)

As an interested citizen, I’ve attended many RIAC meetings since ~2008.

  • It’s clear that we have a strong need for improved services in under-served areas.
  • Some children can’t do homework at home, some folks can’t work from home, or they can’t stream video, and on and on.
  • Quality of life effects aside, there’s concrete evidence that this adversely affects property values, as buyers look elsewhere.
  • The City is evaluating RIAC Request for Proposal (RFP) responses to improve rural access. I support cost-effective efforts as a public good.

Sign regulations, including LED signage; P&Z review

I OPPOSE visual and light pollution. Period. I'd be reluctant to relax lighting regulations.

  • As I understand it, some residents support limited use (e.g. Lafayette High School), but others oppose setting an “approval precedent” for LED signage.
  • As with many issues, I’m warily open-minded. There may be a rationale for LED signage in place of other approved lighting and with other restrictions.
  • For example, LEDs can increase useful illumination while reducing light pollution.
